JobsOhio and the State Encourage Companies to Explore UN Procurement

COLUMBUS – JobsOhio and the State of Ohio welcomed the first United Nations (UN) and Ohio Business Forum held in the state.  Dmitri Dovgopoly, Director of the UN Procurement Division, said the event is an opportunity for the UN to attract procurement from businesses and service providers beyond Greater New York City.

“The United States is the largest supplier of UN procurement, and 90 percent of our U.S. purchasing occurs in the tri-state area of New York, Jersey and Connecticut,” said Dovgopoly. “There is a feeling that we can widen our sourcing and do it in a more targeted way, and we believe Ohio is a great state to start with.”

The UN carries out many humanitarian and peacekeeping missions that rely on procurement support, from distributing relief supplies and food supplements, to placing itself between warring nations and providing medical products.

“The UN Procurement Office offers an amazing opportunity for Ohio businesses to expand sales of goods and services globally,” said Ohio Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor. “Our goal is for Ohio companies to succeed not only here in the state, but ultimately across the country and around the world.”

JobsOhio sponsored the event to foster opportunities for Ohio companies to grow and expand businesses.

“This is the first time this UN Procurement team has had this kind of interaction with companies from one entire state,” said JobsOhio President and Chief Investment Officer John Minor.  “That makes sense, because when you look at Ohio, our diverse industry base lines up very well with the UN’s procurement opportunities.”

Minor said aviation, information technology, food processing, automotive, medical devices, logistics and chemical products are among the sectors that both thrive in Ohio and are well-represented at this business forum.
